How Late Can You Check In for a Flight?
Full-service airlines close online check-in and bag drop about 45–60 minutes before departure (45 minutes is the US domestic standard for checked bags, 60 for international), while low-cost carriers run stricter, different clocks: Ryanair closes bag drop 40 minutes out and gates a full 30 minutes out — and from 10 November 2026 its check-in desks close 60 minutes before every flight. The gate is the last clock, not the first.
How Late Can You Check In for a Flight?: questions people actually ask
What is Ryanair's check-in deadline?
Today: online check-in closes 2 hours before departure, bag drop closes 40 minutes out, and the gate closes 30 minutes out. From 10 November 2026 the airport desks and bag drop close 60 minutes before departure. Check the cut-offs on your own booking — they depend on your flight date and route.
How early should I get to the airport for an international flight?
Two to three hours before departure is the workable standard at major hubs: it covers check-in and bag-drop deadlines, security queues at peak waves (longer in Europe since EES biometrics went live), and the long walks terminal layouts impose.
Do airlines ever hold gates for late passengers?
Rarely, and only for same-airline connections or weather-disrupted waves. Gate-holding for a single late passenger blocks a slot the whole aircraft needs — assume no.
What happens to my bag if I check in but miss the flight?
Airlines pull checked bags of no-show passengers before departure for security reasons — you will not have a bag flying without you.
Why does the check-in deadline exist?
The deadline is not the airline being awkward — it is the moment your bag must enter the automated sorting system to make its flight, and the moment the passenger manifest, weight-and-balance numbers and seat map get finalised. Full-service long-haul carriers commonly use 60-minute bag-drop cutoffs; low-cost carriers are often stricter, not looser, because they turn aircraft around in 30–40 minutes.
Online check-in vs bag drop vs the gate
Three separate clocks run on your booking. Online check-in usually opens 24–48 hours out and closes 45–90 minutes before departure (American closes it 45 minutes before domestic flights and 90 before international). Bag drop closes 40–60 minutes out depending on carrier and route: Delta and United require checked bags 45 minutes before US domestic departures and 60 before international ones. The gate closes 15–20 minutes out on full-service airlines — but 30 minutes on Ryanair and many low-cost carriers, and arriving at a closed gate means denied boarding with no compensation, which is a fare rule you agreed to, not a delay.
The low-cost clocks are different (and changing)
Low-cost carriers enforce earlier deadlines than the full-service default, not later ones. Ryanair is the strictest and the most copied: online check-in opens 24 hours out (48 with purchased seats) and closes 2 hours before departure — a fine applies if you arrive at the airport without a boarding pass on carriers that charge for one — bag drop closes 40 minutes before departure, and the gate closes a full 30 minutes out, double the full-service norm. easyJet and Wizz Air run similar 30-minute gate closures.
The deadline landscape is also moving: Ryanair announced in April 2026 that from 10 November 2026 its airport check-in desks and bag drop will close 60 minutes before departure (up from 40), explicitly to absorb the longer European border queues since the EES biometric system went live. If your flight is after that date, the 40-minute Ryanair advice you find elsewhere is out of date — always re-check the cut-offs printed on your booking for the date you actually fly.
What actually happens if you miss the deadline?
If you check in on time but reach a closed gate, most airlines will rebook you on the next available flight for a fee or fare difference, and a few will simply treat it as a no-show and cancel the whole reservation — including the return. If you are going to be late, call the airline before the deadline: proactive no-show protection works far more often than arriving to argue.
